ADHD Differential Diagnostic Evaluations
|
| |
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can prevent children and
adults from reaching their true potential. People with ADHD can have
difficulties concentrating and following through with projects. They can
also be impulsive, easily distracted and hyperactive or fidgety. ADHD is a
controversial subject and because of this some people never get
appropriately diagnosed or treated while others are given treatment when
they don’t really have the condition. At Russell Associates we start with a
differential diagnostic evaluation, a special process designed to determine
first if there is an attention problem and if there is then to see if there
are non-ADHD problems that may be causing or contributing to it. Most ADHD
evaluations focus on seeing if the client fits the typical pattern of
symptoms that usually go along with the disorder. While this is an important
step, we feel that it should not be the only step. There are many disorders
that can look like ADHD. For example, children with posttraumatic stress
disorder or some sleep disorders often look like they have ADHD when they
don’t. The differential diagnostic evaluation is designed to see if any of
these other disorders exist and to determine if they are causing or
worsening the ADHD symptoms. This is very important because these other
problems need a very different type of treatment.
If any of these other disorders are
present we either treat them or refer you to appropriate treatment. As these
other problems resolve we will monitor the ADHD symptoms to see how much
they improve.
