Our Philosophy of Treatment

  • Good Steward. We need to be good stewards of the time we spend with you and the financial investment you make in your work with us. This means we need to make every moment count, to help you accomplish as much as possible in each session.

  • Safety, control and predictability. We need to work together to maintain your sense of safety, control, and predictability as this will give you the best foundation to do your best work in counseling. A sense of safety comes from the bond of trust that we create together. You will feel in control when you realize that you can start, stop, speed up or slow down the work at any time. We will keep you informed of what to expect in each session so that you can predict as much as possible what will happen in counseling.

  • Partnership. Counseling works best when the client and the counselor form a partnership. In the first 1-4 sessions we will get to know each other and develop an understanding of your issues, a clear goal of how you want to change and a clear plan of how that goal is going to be reached. This understanding is built on all of our knowledge and experience with people in general and all of your knowledge and experience about your life in particular.

  • Whatever it takes. We are whatever it takes counselors and we work best with whatever it takes clients. If you are not making progress, we will get consultations from other experts, research new approaches to your problem, wake up a 3 am to figure out a better way, go to workshops, get specialized training or refer you to other specialists. In short, we will do whatever it takes to help you move forward in your life. We also expect you to do whatever it takes. This means that you may need to talk about things in your present life, your past or your childhood. You may need to try new behaviors, get training to improve your skills in some area, confront uncomfortable emotions and issues, allow us to talk with other friends or family members, etc. Effective therapy will not always be easy and enjoyable but it should improve your life in major ways.

  • Openess. Coming to a counselor is different than going to your internist or dentist. If you are uncomfortable with them you are probably not going to see them for another 6 months. In counseling it is important for you to feel safe and comfortable with us. Please feel free to ask any question you need to ask to know that we are the right people to help you in this part of your journey. We will be happy to answer any question about our background and training, our philosophy of treatment or professional experience. You can also ask personal questions.

  • Honesty. Most of the time people do not get honest and unbiased feedback from friends and relatives. Counseling should be one place where you can count on honesty. Please be forewarned that if you ask us about our thoughts, opinions or reactions to something you have said or done, we will give you a painfully true answer.

  • Integration of Faith and Practice. We enjoy working with clients of all faiths and those with no particular faith. Dr. Russell is a practicing Christian and believes that it is his calling to be a psychologist. Because of his personal faith he tries to run the practice in a Christ-like manner, always striving for the highest levels of ethics, acceptance of everyone and anyone, honesty, dedication and self-sacrifice. All techniques used are consistent with both science and scripture.
