Repetitive Emotional Journaling is a simple but surprisingly effective
technique that can help you to work through many memories on your own.
When you
get upset your brain tends to freeze. Hence, whenever you think about an
upsetting memory your brain freezes and the memory freezes with it. The act
of writing or typing is calming all by itself so it tends to keep you from
getting but so upset and prevents your brain from completely freezing. This
lets you slowly begin to see the memory from a different perspective.
This
technique will only work if you diligently follow 2 rules. First you have
to repeatedly write about the same memory. Resolving a memory is like
learning to ride a bike, you have to do it over and over, improving a little
more each time. Second, you have to really focus on your feelings. If you
just write about the facts it will not help at all. Use as many feeling
words as you can and don’t hold your feelings back.
